Providence firefighters were dispatched to 1830 Westminister Street at the train tracks for a reported house fire. On arrival a second alarm was struck with heavy fire showing from a 4 story vacant residential over commercial. Lines were stretched in as crews initiated a aggressive interior attack, due due to rapid progression of fire to the upper floors crews were evacuated from the building and went into a defensive operation. Multiple deck guns and elevated master streams were used to stop the fire from spreading to a large vacant brick building in the rear. Heavy smoke was visible from a distance as companies tried to gain control, which they did about two hours after the initial alarm and transmission of a third alarm. No injuries were reported at this time, the building was heavily damaged. This fire is almost a year to the date of last years fire at the vacant colonial knife mill building, that lot is being used for a carnival at the time of this fire.
It is with deepest regret that we announce the line of duty death (LODD) of Captain Frank Quetta, Ladder 2, Group C.
